If you've ever downloaded music from a file sharing site, chances are that you have experienced a cuckoo egg.
Definition by WhatIs.com: "A cuckoo egg is an MP3 file that typically contains 30 seconds of the original song with the remainder of the song overwritten with cuckoo clock noises, white noise, and/or voice messages such as, '"Congratulations, you must've goofed up somewhere."' Ideally, a cuckoo egg should have the same playing length as the music it pretends to be. The purpose of cuckoo eggs is to deter the downloading and sharing of MP3 files using Napster and similar approaches."
The "Cuckoo Egg Project" was developed by Michael and Stephanie Fix as a way to prevent illegal downloading and sharing of copyrighted music. Ironically, because cuckoo eggs use unauthorized parts of copyrighted songs, they are also not legal.
However they claim that because a cuckoo egg only uses a sample part of a song, in contrast to an entire song download from file sharing sites, the cuckoo egg is more justifiable in regards with fair use laws. So if you use a file sharing site to download music, don't be surprised if you get an annoying cuckoo egg in the middle of your song.

Microsoft announced the second generation of Zune music players with three new models. Looking to compete this holiday season with the industry leading Apple iPod player, Zune unveiled new 4GB and 8GB flash based players, as well as an upgraded 80GB hard drive verison.

Duo deal to offer online music By GORDON MASSONLONDON -- EMI has become the fourth and final major music distrib to ink a deal with YouTube that will allow the Web site's users to play copyrighted musicvideos without fear of litigation.
EMI has also committed to working with YouTube and its parent company, Google, to establish new business models to generate revenues from the online use of its musicvids. YouTube will be allowed to carry videos by EMI artists such as David Bowie, Coldplay, Gorillaz, Lily Allen and Norah Jones.
YouTube has already signed similar pacts with Universal, Warner and Sony BMG.
"Through this agreement EMI Music and its artists will be fairly compensated for their work," said EMI Group chief exec Eric Nicoli.
Though it's last to the table, EMI is the one label that has seen how YouTube can quickly create a star. Capitol Records tyro rock act OK Go became an Internet sensation thanks to its video of band members navigating treadmills, which in turn led to significant album sales.
Financial details were not disclosed, but it is likely that EMI has an agreement similar to those of its rivals; each of the other three diskeries took a reported $50 million stake in YouTube, plus a share of revenues its own content generates. Company will be sharing advertising dollars, too.
YouTube is testing new audio library tool AudioSwap, which allows users to replace audio in a clip with audio from the library being built with help from the major labels.

'Midnight' posts year's biggest one-week tally

Linkin Park's first album in four years, "Minutes to Midnight" (Warners), posted the year's biggest one-week tally, selling 623,000 copies in the week ended Sunday.
The rap-rock act also established a new record for most digital copies sold in a week -- 84,000 -- topping the previous record holder, Justin Timberlake's "FutureSex/LoveSounds," by nearly 20,000 units.
Band's last disc, 2003's "Meteora," sold 810,000 in its first week.
The third album from R&B singer Tank, "Sex, Love & Pain" (Blackstreet/Universal Motown), came in at No. 2, selling 103,000 copies. It is the first time he has cracked the top 10.
Wilco posted their second top-10 album as "Sky Blue Sky" (Nonesuch) sold 87,000 to open at No. 4.
Gretchen Wilson's third album, "One for the Boys" (Columbia Nashville), sold 73,000 copies. While all of her albums have debuted in the top 10, it is the first time she has sold fewer than 200,000 copies in the sales sesh.
Megadeth's first album for Roadrunner, "United Abominations," became the metal band's first top 10 album in 13 years. Disc sold 54,000 and came in at No. 8.
Warner Music Group, which had four albums in the top 10 (Linkin Park, Wilco, Michael Buble and Megadeth), saw its market share for the week skyrocket to 27.2%, right behind Universal. Company's current market share of 19.8% is the highest it has been in five years.
Other debuts repped career highs in sales for Rufus Wainwright -- "Release the Stars" (Geffen) sold 24,000 (No. 23) -- and Pink Martini -- "Hey Eugene!" (Heinz) sold 19,000 (No. 30).
