Music Download - How Unfair DRM Restrictions Can Make Paid Song Downloads Worthless!

For music download solutions, it's pretty much common knowledge that this includes getting either legal downloads online, or using a P2P sharing site to get free music downloads with ease.

With that being said, however, in looking to get music online there are a number of online music stores and sharing sites to select from. Legal music sites are actually online music stores that allow you to buy individual songs and albums with ease from the comfort of your home.

There are an assortment of popular online music stores to get music downloads from, including; The iTunes Store, Napster, Amazon MP3 Downloads, Zune Marketplace, Nokia Music Store, eMusic, Kazaa and TuneTribe. Unfortunately, the legal music download sites often have Digital Rights Management code concealed within their paid song downloads.

Unfair DRM coding in your songs can restrict the music you've paid for in a variety of ways. Typically, DRM limits the number of times you can download a song and forbids you the ability to burn it to CD.

However, many people are unaware that digital rights management can also affect all the subscription-based downloads that you've previously paid for by making those paid song downloads inoperable if, or when, you cancel your subscription service!

Take this example of how unfair DRM restrictions are... Lets say that in the past you bought all of your music CD's from Target, but recently you started shopping at Walmart.

Now just imagine that one day someone shows up from Target and takes back ALL of the music CD's that you previously purchased from them ...ONLY because you decided to change where you buy your music from!

That would be outrageous, right? But that's exactly what would happen if you decided to stop your online music subscription service from one site to another.

Question: What would happen if you have hundreds of paid music downloads from the Kazaa music service on your computer, and one day you decide to switch to the Napster music service?

Answer: Because of Kazaa's use of DRM, once you cancel your membership with Kazaa, you would no longer be able to listen to the Kazaa songs on your computer... Despite the fact that you legally purchased the songs!

So, instead of being able to listen to those song downloads that you've already paid for, you would get an error message telling you that because you are no longer a current Kazaa subscriber all of your paid song downloads are now inoperable! Having to pay for the same song download over and over again is just one reason DRM is unfair for online music consumers.

It's a fact that online music stores that put DRM coding into their song downloads has faced much criticism and scrutiny over the years - even from the music artists themselves!

However, the good news is that some legal music download sites, like eMusic, do not place DRM in their free or paid song downloads. Furthermore, despite the challenges legal music download sites have encountered over the years, it's important to understand the pros and cons of getting unlimited free music downloads from online sharing sites.
